If you are talking about an outside hot tub, the maintenance is pretty basic. You can use either bromine or chlorine to keep the water sanitized. Chlorine has that bleachy odor that can be bothersome. Or you could have an ionizer installed which pretty much eliminates the need for chemicals. You should change the water every one to two months or more often if the tub is used a lot. The PH of the tub is one of the most important things as if it is too high or low it can cause the seals in the pump to deteriorate and also cause your skin to itch. You can buy a basic test kit at the pool store and follow the instructions for testing. Every once in a while you can have a sample of the water tested at the pool store and they will tell you exactly what you need to add for chemicals. After a while, maintenance will become pretty routine and you will know how often you need to add the chlorine, etc.
