Test For ADHD Diagnostic Criteria To Determine If Your Child Has ADHD

There is no single test for . According to the APA (American Psychiatric Association) there are certain symptoms and criteria that are to be considered before a can be made. According to the criteria determined by the APA Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD), or Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder () are one and the same except with regards to the basic symptoms that determine which your child falls into. the three subtypes of as laid out by the APA are:

1. Predominantly inattentive type ADHD

2. Predominantly hyperactive/impulsive type ADHD

3. Combined inattentive and hyperactive/impulsive type ADHD

It is important to note that some children, although not many, are diagnosed with ADHD but fall into a not specified category. This occurs when a child has the inattentive, hyperactive and/or impulsive behaviors and symptoms but they do not fit into any of the three abovementioned categories or sub-types for some reason.

Using the criteria laid out by the APA a mental health expert will test for ADHD and determine whether a child has the disorder. Part of the diagnostic process involves information gathered from the child, the parents, and other adults that routinely come into contact with the child. the diagnostic process will be carried out as follows:

1. the child will be interviewed by the healthcare professional.

2. the child’s medical history will be considered.

3. the child’s social, emotional, educational, and behavioral history will be discussed with the parents.

4. the child will undergo a physical examination to rule out medical issues that could account for the ADHD-like symptoms and behaviors.

5. the parents, teachers, and other adults in the child’s life will be provided with behavioral rating checklists. These are used to evaluate the symptoms that the child exhibits.

Sometimes determining if the child’s behaviors are the result of Attention Deficit/Hyperactive Disorder can be a difficult process. in order to determine this, the above diagnostic criteria are used as well as a number of written tests and verbal tests. These tests are to detect associated disorders as ADHD rarely occurs singly and is usually accompanied by another disorder as well. many ADHD children experience problems when it comes to learning to read and write. They are also known to struggle with mathematics. Medical tests are done so as to expose any medical issues to explain the issues that the child is experiencing as there are certain health issues that can manifest ADHD-like symptoms.

What medical issues could account for the apparently ADHD behavior?

* Hearing or visual problems

Because there is no single diagnostic test for ADHD many people question whether there is a possibility that ADHD is over-diagnosed. This is a legitimate concern when one considers the number of children already diagnosed with the disorder as well as the number that are diagnosed each year. That figure is constantly on the increase. Most experts dismiss the high number of diagnoses and attribute this to a greater awareness and improved diagnostic techniques.

Despite what many believe ADHD is not a solely childhood disorder. there are many adults with the disorder as well but they might never have been tested or diagnosed. Attention Deficit/Hyperactive Disorder is a lifelong condition. When it is not treated many problems can occur that will result in a severely restricted quality of life for the individual concerned. It is not uncommon for people with ADD/ADHD to suffer with low self-esteem, frustration, professional failures, substance abuse, anxiety, and depression. If you are an adult who suspects that you have ADHD there is help available. You will need to visit with a mental health expert who might use what is called the Wender Utah Rating Scale (WURS). This is a written test that you take to determine what difficulties you experienced as a child. This test is designed to calculate the severity and even the occurrence of the symptoms associated with the disorder as they appear during childhood.
