Question by tater: How do you hook up 240 power for a hot tub?
I just got a used hot tub and I need to know how to hook up the 240 power it requires. I know a little about elecitricty, like changing outlets and switches, but nothing of this magnitude. I need to know how to run it from my breaker box to the hot tub. Any websites or suggestions? Or is this way out of my league?

Hot Tub101 – Great Tips & Ideas
Roxy, Connor, and Maddie have moved into the new house. It’s a very big house, so Connor wonders how they could afford it. Roxy tells him that Sara sent them money in the mail, just for being good friends. She’s a famous actress now who is very rich, so she sent them quite a lot of simoleons. So then Roxy and Connor explore the house. The house is located all the way on the other side of Riverblossom Hills, over the river and bridge. But their friends will still visit often. It’s a 3 bedroom house with 3 bathrooms. 1 bathroom is downstairs, another 1 is in the master bedroom, while the last 1 is for Maddie when she’s older. It’s a 1 car garage with a driveway, a HUGE backyard, including a 9 acre field. They also have a large greenhouse where they can plant crops and other plants. They have a pool outback with a hot tub. They have a large dining room, kitchen, and living room. They also have a balcony upstairs, and another larger balcony meant to stand and view at the environment and it also leads to the downstairs pool area. There is a very tall tower outside, but they don’t really know what it’s for, or how to get up there. So, yeah. This is pretty much their dream house. “Copyright Disclaimer Under Section 107 of the Copyright Act 1976, allowance is made for “fair use” for purposes such as criticism, comment, news reporting, teaching, scholarship, and research. Your right this is way out of your league. You need a pro, if you do this wrong somebody is going to get hurt real bad, or DEAD. Don’t fool around with it, CALL A PRO.
go to your breaker panel take off the cover see if you have 2 open slots ,all 220 is 120 watts double isay 220 you say 240 alls you will ever get is 220 on volt meter so just know if i say 220 it the same, in your panel if you have a disconnect this might be a good time to use it. if not work careful go to the get 220 wire since your out door code calls 4 the wire to be covered with romex or pvc will work perfect pull you wire through pipe as you put you fitting on ok the wire is position find aa knock out on your panel put aknock out connector on panel 220 has 4 wires black is hot red is hot these both got to your double breaker one on each side white and ground both go to the ground bar close panel go to tub wire up b to b r to r w to w ground goes to a little green screw im not so good at explaining peace fucker
I would have to say that it is not a task a normal do it yourself person should attempt. Reason being is that it requires the installation of a GFCI circuit breaker into your breaker panel and depending on the location of the panel in proximity to the hot tub it will probably require the installer to run conduit from the breaker panel to the hot tub (possibly under ground). The size of wire that is needed also depends on how much current the tub will draw and the distance the tub is away from the panel. Most places require an electrical permit to install such items. What you can do to save money is buy your own breaker from Home Depot or the like instead of paying an inflated price from the person who installs it. If you get all of the information off of the motor inside the tub (voltage, amperage, horsepower, etc.) the clerk in the electrical department should be able to get you the correct size breaker. Also keep in mind that many hot tubs require 120volt service as well for lights, televisions, CD players, etc. My advice is to contact at least two licensed and bonded electrical contractors to request a bid for the proposed work.
Hire a licensed electrician, and do it right.
It needs to be #8 stranded copper wire, Ground Fault protected, and located at least 10 feet from the water, with it’s own quick disconnect shut-off panel.
Don’t take chances with people’s lives.
If you are saying “nothing of this magnitude”, then you’ve answered your own question.
There are codes that have to be followed and there’s a reason for it. Safety!
You can have a qualified electrician to come out and inspect the work that you have done and if satisfactory, they will usually install and connect the breaker in the same 1hr charged for the service call.
A lot of the ground work, you can do yourself. Dig the trench, put the wire in the conduit, and even hook the wire to the hottub. This will save a lot of money for you, but make sure that you do the proper research from Home Depot, Lowes, etc. to get the proper size wire, the right conduit, the correct trench depth and length, etc. Also, make sure that you get the right size DOUBLE breaker for the panel. All 220/240 service requires a double breaker – that’s because when you hook it up, instead of a hot, a common, and a ground wire, you have two hots and a ground (each “leg” is 110/120)
Good luck and happy cuzing!!!
You will need a 2-pole breaker, either 30 or 50 amp. Check the wiring diagram on the electrical box cover. For a 30 amp breaker, you should use 10 gage wire, 8 gage for 50 amp. If the run is over 75 feet, go up a gage. The 240 volt power is for the heaters. The circulating pump should run off 120 volts and there should be a step-down transformer in your electric box. Your local hardware store can provide what you need and answer any questions. You might want to find out if a permit is required from your local building inspector for the plumbing or electrical work.
Dont mess with 240V. Hire a certified electrician and have him/her do the work. Your flirting with danger is you do it yourself. Remember that electricity and water together can kill.
If you have to ask it is out of your league.
Sorry but water and 240V don’t mix.
I will tell you the size of wire and breaker depends on how far you are from the breaker box and what the heater calls for. Don’t forget a GFI breaker will have to be used.
Call an experienced electrician. Do you want to save $ 100 but electrocute all your friends?
